Book of Longing
by Leonard Cohen
(McClelland & Stewart, April 2006; $32.99)

Canada's (arguably) greatest living poet and musician returns with a new, highly anticipated poetry collection after a 13-year hiatus. The verses, which include some ballads in altered form from his recent recording Ten New Songs, run the gamut from self-conscious to self-effacing; they're often simple, a mere two lines at times, but invariably striking and thought-provoking. In addition to his poems, Cohen has included his own art. Often erotic, always playful, these line drawings are a fine addition to the text. The poet's recent and highly publicized financial woes - he successfully sued a prior manager who allegedly made off with most of his money - are a burden to him and a boon to his fans. We can expect more than usual output from this highly talented and unpredictable Canadian icon in the coming years.
